Thank you very much for visiting the Seoul Pastic Surgery home page, and I'm very surprised to see your question because it's my first time to recieve a question written in english at my home page.
Autoimmune disease is a problem of immune system, and the main roll of immune system is the defense mechamism against the foreign body which invade the human body. Bacteria may be the organic one, and there are many inorganic materials.
In autoimmune disease, the immune system is very activated and the immune system thinks your own body as foreign material and phagocytosis of WBC and lymphocyte and inflammatory reaction may occur. So the patiensts must chronically use anti-inflammatory drug such as steroid and NSAID.
Steroid prolongs the heeling time so ths wound will take time much time to heel compared to the others. NSAIS has bleeding tendecy so if the operation would be a big one, NSAID must be discontined 2 weeks preoperatively.
Some plastic surgery operations need alloplastic materials which are foreign bodies and that do not have a tedancy to induce immune reaction. Augmentation rhinoplasty is an example that needs the alloplastic material.
As discused above, the immune system is activated in autoimmune disease and no body can predict there won't be immune reaction or inflammatory reaction after the insertion of alloplastic material. And the use of steroid weakens the defense mechanism against baterial invasion. So if your disease is activated you must use the drugs you'd beter not have the surgery which must use alloplastic material.
But the surgeries which do not use alloplastic materials such as eyelid surgery and some nose surgery will be OK. But the wound heeling time may be prolong compared to the normal people.
Surgery will be OK or not depends on what kinds of surgery you want.
The double eyelid surgery which is very popular in orientals will be OK, but augmentaion of nose have some risk.
